What is Kinetic Zen?
Kinetic Zen is a martial arts academy in Islington, London, offering Krav Maga and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) classes. We focus on practical self-defence, fitness, and mental resilience, providing a supportive environment for all skill levels.
Who can join Kinetic Zen classes?
Our grown up classes are open to everyone aged 18 and above, regardless of experience or fitness level. We pride ourselves on creating an inclusive community where beginners and seasoned practitioners train together.
What is Krav Maga, and how is it taught at Kinetic Zen?
Krav Maga is a practical self-defence system emphasizing instinctive movements and real-world scenarios. At Kinetic Zen, we teach Krav Maga with empathy and focus on building confidence through realistic training.
What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), and do you offer classes?
Yes, we offer BJJ classes focusing on ground fighting techniques and leverage. Our BJJ program is suitable for all levels and emphasizes technique over strength.
Do you offer classes for children?
Absolutely! Our Kids Jiu-Jitsu program is designed for ages 5–14, teaching self-defence, discipline, and confidence in a fun and safe environment.
What should I wear to my first class?
Comfortable workout clothes are perfect for your first class. We train barefoot or with clean indoor shoes. For BJJ, a gi is recommended but not required initially.
How do I book a trial class?
You can book a trial class through our trial class booking page or contact us via WhatsApp for assistance.
Where is Kinetic Zen located?
We are located at Finsbury Leisure Centre, Norman Street, London EC1V 3PU, easily accessible from Old Street, Angel, Farringdon, and Moorgate stations.
What are your membership options?
We offer monthly memberships with no mandatory price rises for active members, plus discounted rates for students, armed forces and emergency services. We also hold a small number of sponsored places for anyone who wants to train but can’t currently afford it, get in touch to find out more.
Do you offer private lessons?
Yes, we provide private Krav Maga and BJJ lessons tailored to individual goals and schedules. Contact us to arrange a session.
Do you offer self-defence classes for women?
Yes, though not as separate women-only sessions, and we’re upfront about why. Roughly half our community, including people on our own coaching and management team, choose to train alongside men in a room built to be ego-free and beginner-safe. Our BJJ programme has particularly strong female representation under coach Abbie O’Toole, a black belt promoted by Roger Gracie. Read more on our self-defence for women page.
What’s the background of your instructors?
Our head coach holds a Krav Maga black belt and has taught self-defence for over a decade. He also holds a Judo black belt (1st Dan), earned at 51 after a 25-year career in tech. Do you sell Krav Maga or BJJ gear?
Yes, our online shop stocks Tatami and Revgear kit, including the Revgear Pinnacle 2 boxing gloves. It’s there mainly to kit out our members and the wider local community rather than to encourage training at home.
